The Kiwanis Club of Augusta meets
Thursdays at noon at the Senator Inn.
Here are the pieces of furniture, hand-made and donated to the Kiwanis Auction by our own Leo Murphy. The coffee tables are made of ash and the gambler's table which can also be used in a dining room or breakfast nook is made of oak. Leo emphasizes the furniture has pocket-hole construction which any contractor worth his salt would know about.
Alice Savage, Young Children's Priority #1
Program; Milt Huntington, Public Relations chair; and Paul

BACKYARD FARMS TOMATO GROWING V.P. SPEAKS AT AUGUSTA KIWANIS CLUB
Dana Berry, Backyard Farms human resources vice president, told Augusta Kiwanians recently of the 365-day-a-year tomato growing operations at their Madison plant which boasts the largest building in Maine. With 11,500 growing lights in a mammoth green house, locally-employed personal gardeners care for the produce and pick them only when they’re red and ripe, according to Berry. The tomatoes are picked and shipped the very same day to retail outlets throughout the Northeast, Hannaford Brothers being their largest customer. Berry said the company spends $7 million annually for Maine-based contractors, truckers and suppliers, the local work force described as the key to productivity and quality. Her reported that the operation began in Madison in 2007 and has operated at full capacity ever since. In response to market demand for high quality tomatoes, Berry said future plans call for a $40 million expansion, another greenhouse and 100 year-round jobs. Auction Chair Gary Mills handed out the auction packets to all members on Thursday. Please get your solicitations done ASAP. The auction is 3 nights this year so we need items to fill more time slots. Please do your part to make this a success! If you can't carry out the assignments for some reason, let your team captain know. Team captains will be calling once a week to ensure the solicitations get done.
Auction Chair Gary Mills asks for
solicitation slips and requests volunteers to
pick up a few more --especially potential
donors with whom they may
have a contact.
Allyson Handley, Peter Thompson and
Carolyn Perry, despite appearances, are not
gathered at a bar per se. They are buying
Kiwanis luncheon tickets from
A couple of mob shots showing some of the 36
Kiwanians appearing at Thursday's luncheon
meeting. Bert Languet and Freeman Littlefield are all ears as Betsy Pohl announces that the Program Committee meets next Thursday before the regular luncheon meeting.
Jeanne Gibson leads a parade of Happy Dollar speakers. She sold her goat Mobile. Karen and Kim in the uniform of the day....Kiwanis Foundation of New England shirts and kaki pants.

If you want to just simply make a donation to the “Kiwanis of Augusta” team… you can do it on line at http://www.mainewish.org/events.asp or just let me know and I will collect the money for our team.
Date and Location: We will be walking roughly 2 miles … one mile out and turn around.
